  • Meghan Markle would have voted in the 2020 election regardless of where she was residing, a report says
  • She is believed to be the first modern royal to cast a ballot in a U.S. presidential election
  • Markle has been actively encouraging people to vote since moving back to California

Meghan Markle has put her words into action and voted early by mail in the 2020 presidential election, reports say.

An unnamed source told Page Six that the former “Suits” star has joined her fellow Americans and cast her ballot in the election after purchasing a home and settling down in California with Prince Harry and their son. The insider also said that Markle would have voted even if she were still living in the U.K.

“Meghan was an American long before she was a royal. She wouldn’t miss voting in this election no matter where she was living,” the source told the outlet.

By casting her ballot, Markle has created history by becoming the first modern royal to vote in a U.S. presidential election, E! News reported.

Markle, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, became a British royal in May 2018 after tying the knot with Prince Harry. As a member of the royal family, the Duchess of Sussex was expected to remain politically neutral like her husband.

After she and Prince Harry stepped down as senior members of the royal family in March and moved to the U.S., Markle has been vocal about the importance of voting and actively encouraged people to cast their ballots in the 2020 election through multiple events.

In August, the duchess joined the virtual event “When All Women Vote #CouchParty” and encouraged her fellow Americans to bring “change.”

“We all know what’s at stake this year. I know it. And we look at the attempts of voter suppression and what that’s doing, it’s all the more reason we need each of you to be out there supporting each other, to understand that this fight is worth fighting, and we all have to be out there mobilizing to have our voices heard,” Markle said during the event.

The duchess’ statement did not sit well with certain British personalities, and Markle faced a lot of criticism for it.

Markle joins the long list of celebrities who voted early in the 2020 election. Notable personalities such as Selena Gomez, Jessica Alba, Elizabeth Banks, Reese Witherspoon, Jensen Ackles, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Madonna, Joe Jonas, Will Ferrell, Camila Cabello, Elle Fanning, Tracee Ellis Ross, Zoe Kravitz and many more have already cast their ballots.
