A police officer, while shooting at a deer, almost hit a man sleeping inside his home in Oak Park, Michigan. The Oak Park Department of Public Safety has started an investigation into the officer.

The incident happened Wednesday, July 15.

Speaking to Fox owned-and-operated television station WJBK, the unidentified resident said he woke up thinking his home was "getting shot up". He soon realized there was a bullet hole in the wall right above his headboard.

"It came right above my head when I was sleeping. I jumped up and then jumped down to the ground, me and my fiancé," the man told the channel.

The man soon learned that the bullet came from a cop who was trying to euthanize an injured deer.

Meanwhile, confirming the incident, Steve Cooper, the Oak Park director of Public Safety, said, "It's definitely not a situation where we were hunting through a residential neighborhood at night because we saw a deer."

"The officer fired two shots into the deer at which point the deer stood up to get away. The officer fired a third shot that put the deer down, but the deer was still moving,” Cooper told the channel, adding that the third bullet went through the animal and into the home of the man. Another bullet hit the deer before striking a car that was parked in the driveway of the home.

Cooper personally apologized to the homeowner and assured that the city "would cover costs".

"We are responsible for every round that goes off and we are aware of that," Cooper said.

The homeowner, however, isn’t willing to budge and has hired an attorney.

"Who in the hell shoots at a deer in front of houses. I just thank god that no one got hurt. They need to change their procedure when it comes to a deer. They don't need to be putting people's lives in danger,” the homeowner told the channel.

Cooper said an internal investigation on the officer was underway.
