Police arrested three people in Kentucky on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in the sale of a baby.

They made the arrests based on a tip received from the officials at Parker Bennett Curry Elementary School in Bowling Green about a woman giving away her child.

The woman turned out to be the mother of the baby, identified as Maria Domingo Perez, 31. Perez gave “conflicting statements” to police at first but later confessed to giving away her child to a couple, according to a press release.

The couple, Pascual Jose Manue, 45, and Catarina Felipe Jose, 37, told detectives that they paid Perez $2,000 for the baby, Bowling Green Police said.

Police didn’t disclose the gender and age of the baby. Social services took custody of the baby and four other children of Perez.

All the three were charged with selling and purchasing of a child for adoption, which is a felony, Fox News reported. It was not immediately clear whether the suspects have an attorney to represent them.

In another incident in November, an advertisement posted on Craigslist by an unknown person alluded to the sale of a baby for $500. The online advertisement claimed that the baby is a "well-behaved 2-week-old". It further said the buyer will be provided with additional clothes and formula for the baby. The person who posted it claimed to work for the Florida Department of Children and Families and also offered to give away the child’s 4-year-old sister without any charge. Florida Department of Law Enforcement launched an investigation and eventually tracked down the person.
