It's one of the biggest nights for music that tends to throw the rule book out the window when it comes to what happens. And the action for the MTV Video Music Awards always begins at one place—the Red-Carpet.

Those who want to tune in for the big night who don't have access to a television won't have to worry about missing any of the big moments however. There will be several viewing options available for anyone who hopes to watch the Red-Carpet arrivals, which begin at 6:15 p.m. EDT.

The actual show will begin at 8 p.m. and will be streamed on MTV's Live Tv site. The Red-Carpet arrivals will be featured on the site as well. Users who wish to stream the show will need a cable provider log-in to access the service.

Users can also download the free MTV App (cable log-in will also be required). The app is available for download on iTunes/Apple TV, Google Play, Roku, Xbox One, Amazon and Chromecast.

The VMAs are known for courting controversial moments over the years, featuring Madonna and Britney Spears kissing onstage during a performance at the 2003 show, Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech in 2009 and starting their on/off years-long feud that is still burning, and Miley Cyrus' infamous twerking on Robin Thicke's leg in 2013. However, while that all happened on stage and inside the show, the red carpet has its own fair share of big moments, mostly involving the fashion choices of that year's attendees.

Celebrities are known for risqué choices on the red carpet of the event, and they often eschew the more standard award show glamourous looks that are seen on red carpets for the Grammys, Emmys, Oscars and other prestigious ceremonies. Some of the most unforgettable looks over the years have included Miley Cyrus' barely-there silver ensemble in 2015, which threatened to expose both her breasts and groin; Niki Minaj's bizarre ensemble that included the remnants of stuffed animals in 2011; Farrah Abraham's Wonder Woman costume in 2016; and Lady Gaga's Meat Dress in 2010.

However, some usual red-carpet staples for the VMAs won't be in attendance this year, skipping out on the red carpet and other festivities. According to TMZ, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are not attending the event this year, which will also be the world debut of Taylor Swift's music video for her single "Look What You Made Me Do" off her upcoming album "Reputation." The song is believed to take aim at her enemies, including West and Kardashian, making their absence more notable.

It's unclear if Swift herself will even show up at the awards or sneak in a surprise performance, though if she does show up, it will mean a potential red-carpet run-in with another of her biggest foes. Katy Perry, whom Swift also has a long-running feud with, is the host of this year's event, and is likely to get a large amount of red carpet coverage as a result.
