Did you know that July 12 is National Pecan Pie Day? This gooey dessert is among the most popular pies in the country, for good reason.

Pecan pie is inarguably delicious. Plus, it has been around for quite some time and has become a staple during holiday gatherings in many Southern households.

A brief history

Some people believe pecan pie was first created by French immigrants who settled in New Orleans, while others say it originally came from Alabama. It’s not clear in which state the pecan pie originated, but one piece of information that remains consistent is that its history is rooted in the South, food and dining website Eater reported.

Pecan trees grow around the Mississippi River area, and were propagated by Native Americans. After the Civil War, pecan became commercially popular, especially in Georgia. Grafted pecan trees also started to pick up popularity in places like Louisiana around the late 1800s.

In 1886, a printed copy of a pecan pie recipe appeared in Harper’s Bazaar magazine. The dessert’s popularity rose even further when Karo Corn Syrup started putting printed recipes of pecan pie on the cans, National Today reported.

As Karo Corn Syrup was distributed across the country, more people were introduced to pecan pie.
