National Respect For Parents Day is celebrated annually on Aug. 1 to appreciate and honor the selfless love of parents towards their children.

The day is observed to recognize the vital role of parents in shaping a child's life. National Respect For Parents Day was first commemorated by Marilyn Dalrymple from Lancaster, California with an intention to "recognize the leadership roles parents have and to reinstate the respect for parents that was evident in the past."

The day is not just a reminder for children to respect their parents but for society to acknowledge the power of parenthood in shaping a successful community.

If you are a parent, you can make use of the day to teach your kids the significance of honoring parents. The first step towards this is by setting a good example, showing them how you respect your own parents.

Here are some ways you can show respect to your parents and make them feel special on this day:

  • Call your parents and talk to them about how you appreciate them
  • Go and spend a day with them
  • Surprise them with a token of love
  • Cook for them or take them out for a meal
  • Spend time with them and listen to their wants
  • Give them credit for the efforts and sacrifices they have made for you
