Houston, Texas, -- A good Samaritan neighbor rescued a woman by fatally shooting her 22-year-old son, who had allegedly opened fire at her.

The unidentified gunman from Houston, who shot his 58-year-old mother at point-blank and fired at neighboring houses, was shot to death by a neighbor, who was described by officials as a good Samaritan, ABC 13 reported.

According to the neighbors, the incidents began when the woman's son started behaving weirdly during a July 4th barbecue, following which the duo left the gathering. After they reached their apartment, the investigators believe the son injured his mother, causing her to bleed from her face.

At around 12.45 a.m. Tuesday, the suspect -- armed with an AK47 -- fired at least 20 bullets at a neighbor's door, where a 16-year-old girl nearly missed being shot, the police said.

The gunman's mother then managed to escape the house. When the neighbor saw her, he took his gun to help her. The police believe the neighbor and the gunman must have fired multiple shots at each other.

The neighbor shot and killed the woman's son, when he saw him firing at her, even after she tried to hide behind a tree. The mother was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive, News Observer reported. It was unclear why the man was targeting his mother.

When the police found the gunman's body, there were two firearms, a pistol, and a semi-automatic rifle, on the ground next to him.

"The way the suspect was just firing indiscriminately, just point-blank shot the mother apparently as he stood over her, was a dangerous individual that likely could have continued shooting. He was already shooting. He damaged not only his apartment but the neighbors," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.

"The neighbors are shaken up because a 16-year-old daughter was sitting at the table where the shots rang out into the main living area. Another apartment was also shot up. Thankfully, that owner, we're told, was away from the apartment at the time," Gonzalez added.

The case is now turned over to a grand jury, who will decide if any charges will be filed against the neighbor.
