  • "Little Women" is this year's fifth Best Picture nominee to cross $100 million mark domestically

Greta Gerwig might have been snubbed by the Academy at this year’s Oscars but fans continue to give the well-deserved love to her movie at the box office. “Little Women” continued its golden run and achieved a box office milestone just two days before the 92nd Annual Academy Awards.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the adaptation of the 1868-hit novel of the same name has crossed the $100 million mark in the U.S., making it the fifth Best Picture nominee to rake in more than $100 million at the box office.

This is Gerwig’s first movie to achieve such feat. Her first movie, “Lady Bird,” accumulated only $78 million worldwide while “Little Women” has managed to earn to more than $164 million at the global box office. The movie was made with a production budget of $40 million.

The numbers could go up as the movie is yet to be released in a few international markets like India, China and Japan.

Other nominated movies to earn more than $100 million domestically included Todd Phillips’ “Joker” ($335 million), “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” ($142 million), “1917” ($122 million), and “Ford v Ferrari” ($115 million).

The “Frances, Ha” actress’s work has been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, but she could not find a place in the Directing category. Gerwig was also not nominated in the Directors’ category at this year’s Golden Globes and the HFPA had to face a lot of backlash over her exclusion.

Apart from Screenplay, the film has been nominated for five more awards, including Best Picture. Film’s lead actress Saoirse Ronan will be running for the Best Actress trophy while Florence Pugh will be hoping to get her hands on the Supporting Actress award. Costume Design and Original Score are the other two nominations for the movie.

“Little Women” will be up against the likes of “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “1917,” “Parasite,” and “Marriage Story” in the Best Picture category.

The latest adaptation based on the lives of the March sisters also stars Emma Watson, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet and Meryl Streep in pivotal roles.
