  • Anthony Hopkins didn't show up to accept the award
  • Fans bashed the Oscars for baiting expectations

The 93rd Academy Awards ended on a very abrupt note Sunday, following the announcement of the Best Leading Actor.

Presenter Joaquin Phoenix announced the Best Leading Actor award went to Anthony Hopkins for "The Father," instead of the late Chadwick Boseman, who was also nominated in the category for his last movie, "Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom."

While fans took to Twitter to show their outrage over Boseman not winning, they also noticed how Phoenix, 46, ended the show on an abrupt note.

"The Academy congratulates Hopkins and accepts the Oscar on his behalf, thank you," Phoenix said, following which the event ended. Hopkins, who won, was not at the venue to accept the award.

Fans also accused the award ceremony on Twitter of baiting expectations of late actor Boseman's win.

One of the users explained the reason behind the anger and wrote, "Here's My Bigger Issues About #ChadwickBoseman Losing: They Used Him. They Used His Image. They Used Him To Boost Viewership. They Switched The Categories Around. They Had Joaquin Phoenix Walking out to Soul Music. They Used CB. That's the bigger issues and F*** Them For It."

Another user noted how the show ended unexpectedly, and shared a funny GIF along with a caption, "Joaquin Phoenix leaving after he presented the last Oscar of the night. #Oscars."

Jemele Hill, the host of "Jemele Hill is Unbothered" podcast for Spotify, also tweeted, "Joaquin Phoenix after announcing Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor."

A fan also noted how the category of the awards was changed and wrote, "Listen to Frances McDormand’s #Oscars speech after #Nomadland won for Best Picture. Then watch Joaquin Phoenix present the Oscar for Best Actor to Anthony Hopkins. And then ask yourself what genius came up with the idea of changing the order of the awards?"

Another user also noted how Phoenix was put in an awkward situation.

"Watching the oscars hype up chadwick boseman winning at the end and then giving it to someone who wasn’t even there while simultaneously putting joaquin phoenix in a super awkward situation was one of the most f***** up things i’ve ever seen on live tv," the user wrote.

Many netizens continued bashing Oscars 2021 for being racist and manipulative.
