With TV networks’ upfronts canceled and the future so unclear, many fans are worrying if their shows will be canceled or renewed for next season. “Outlander” fans, however, don’t have to worry about waiting for an answer.

Starz renewed “Outlander” for Season 5 and Season 6 at the same time. That means that fans can rest assured that even if Sunday’s season finale ends with a major cliffhanger for Jamie and Claire, they’ll be back eventually.

When they will return, however, is unknown. The global pandemic is pushing their planned start date. Jamie Fraser actor Sam Heughan, who also became an executive producer this season, revealed that they were supposed to be in production right now, but they’re currently delaying “Outlander” Season 6 production until the fall.

As producers, Heughan and Claire actress Caitriona Balfe get early access to scripts. The Scottish actor said in March that he’d already read the script for the Season 6 premiere and was very excited about it.

Fans will have to wait for Season 6, but the “Outlander” Season 5 finale airs Sunday on Starz. It sounds like it’ll be quite an eventful hour. Heughan called it “terrific.”

The finale will pick up with Claire, who was captured at the end of last week’s episode. Jamie, of course, will go after his wife, and it looks like the struggle will be intense. In the trailer, Jamie says, in part, “I have lived through war and lost much. I know what’s worth a fight. Honor and courage are matters of the bone. And what a man will kill for, he’ll sometimes die for too,” he says in a voiceover.

Will Jamie have to die for Claire? It seems unlikely considering Heughan is working on the next season, but the stakes are always high on “Outlander.”

Readers of Diana Gabaldon’s books know that “A Fiery Cross” has basically been covered by the show at this point. They’re diving into “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” in the finale, and that book includes some gruesome scenes related to Claire’s capture and Jamie’s quest to rescue her.

Anticipate plenty of action, violence and heart-stopping moments in the season finale, but don’t expect it to end with a Season 6 trailer. No new footage will be available since filming hasn’t begun yet.
