Two pit bulls mauled a teenage girl while she was walking in Durban, South Africa. According to local reports, the incident took place Monday on Stanley Copley Road near Crocus Road in Sydenham.

Rescue Care Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the teenager, who was seriously injured, laying on the grass. A paramedics official, identified as Garrith Jamieson, said Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked to stabilize the girl.

"It is believed the two pit bulls somehow escaped from a nearby residence when they attacked the girl,” Jamieson told local media. "The one dog was shot on the scene and collapsed and died a short way up from the scene while the second one ran away. Once stabilized the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital by ambulance for the urgent care she required."

The girl, who was not identified, remained in critical condition as of Tuesday. Authorities said the incident was under investigation.

Pit bulls are a ferocious breed of canines and are often involved in several unprovoked attacks, many of which turned fatal. In the United States, there have been several pit bull-related attacks. The most recent was over the weekend on Saturday when a woman and her pet dog were attacked by three pit bulls in Marlborough, Massachusetts.

According to a local report, the pit bulls broke through an open window at a home and attacked the woman and her dog. The woman was walking her German shepherd when the incident took place. The woman and the dog both suffered injuries.

In another recent incident, a 7-year-old girl was mauled by two pit bulls while she was playing outside her home in Cleveland County in North Carolina.
