KEY POINTS

  • LetsGoDigital released new mock-up images of what a PlayStation 5 controller could look like when it releases.
  • The mock-up images were based on a recent Sony patent.
  • The improved design would offer better ways to control characters.
  • The images aren't official in any way, but look very convincing.

The PlayStation 5 is poised to make its debut by holiday 2020, but it's not too early to start trying to figure out what the system itself or its components may look like.

LetsGoDigital, the very same site that created mock-ups of the PlayStation 5 devkit that's been floating around online, took it upon themselves to also make an illustration of the PS5 controller, too.

Of course, it's important to keep in mind that this is in no way the finalized image of the controller, nor is it to be taken as fact. But given that the design, which certainly looks believable enough, was taken from newer Sony patents, it's very probable that the final product could look something like this.

You'll note that it's overall a much sleeker design than before. Pulled from the patent, there's a way for controllers to be utilized by multiple remote users at the same time as well, which means players could potentially share their game sessions. There's no word on how this could work so far, but it could likely run similarly to Sony's Share Play feature.

As such, the controller also features a screen on the Touchpad, which was not there in the previous iteration for the PlayStation 4. That could be an unlikely augment simply added by virtue of artistic liberty, but it would certainly add some oomph to a controller part that had very little utility up until now.

It'll still be some time before we have a better idea of what to expect from either the PlayStation 5's external casing or even the controller. The system isn't supposed to launch until holiday 2020, according to Sony, which leaves plenty of time left for supposition. What will it end up looking like? We'll have to wait and see what Sony has up its sleeve for a reveal.
