  • A mall fight in New Jersey between two teens resulted in only the Black teen getting handcuffed
  • Civil rights organizations have demanded the officers be removed over alleged racial discrimination
  • The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office has since launched an investigation into the incident

Authorities in New Jersey have launched an investigation after a mall brawl between two teenagers — one white and one Black — resulted in only the latter getting handcuffed even though neither minor appeared to have resisted police.

The incident, which occurred at Bridgewater Commons Mall over the weekend, saw the two teens exchanging punches before officers arrived and broke up the fight, ABC News reported.

However, only the Black teen, identified by ABC 7 as an 8th grader named Kye, was handcuffed by police, while the white teen was placed on a couch, footage of the incident that has made its way to social media showed.

While both teens did not resist the arrest, one of the responding Bridgewater Township Police Department (BTDP) officers "basically tackled" Kye and put her knee on his back.

"Then the female officer came over and put her knee on my upper back too and started helping him put cuffs on me, while (the white high schooler) was just sitting down on the couch watching the whole thing," Kye recalled.

"It's cause he's Black. Racially motivated," a bystander remarked off-camera.

The unidentified white teen, who was allegedly the cause of the fight as he picked on one of Kye's friends, remained uncuffed at the end of the video.

Both Kye and the white teen have been banned from entering the mall for three years, said Bridgewater Commons Mall senior general manager Troy Fischer.

In response to the video of the incident, the BTDP called for an internal affairs investigation and requested the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office to assist as the footage "made members of our community upset," the department said in a statement.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy was left "deeply disturbed" by the incident as it showed "what appears to be racially disparate treatment," the official said on Twitter.

The New Jersey branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has since demanded the two officers involved in the incident be removed from the force over what it claimed was a case of racial discrimination.

The case is now being investigated by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Internal Affairs Unit, Frank Roman Jr., the agency's deputy chief, said.

Bridgewater Township Mayor Matthew Moench promised in a statement that there would only be an "impartial, objective and thorough" investigation.

Anyone present at the scene and recorded any portion of the incident is urged to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Internal Affairs Unit at (908) 575-3300 or via the STOPit app.
