One person died and two others were injured in a dog attack in Fort Madison, Iowa, on Friday morning.

The Fort Madison Police Department responded to a home Friday morning after receiving reports of a dog attack. When the officers arrived at the home, they found a male brown boxer attacking a man in the front yard. The officers had to shoot and kill the canine in order to stop it from attacking the unidentified man. The man was then treated on the scene by first responders.

The responding officers then found another man lying in the doorway of the home. The man, identified as 33-year-old Robert Joseph Quick, asked the officers to first check on his 5-year-old daughter who was attacked and bitten in the face by the animal. All the three victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where Quick succumbed to injuries.

Officers said Quick “undoubtedly saved her (his daughter’s) life by his actions.” Interim Police Chief Stacy Weber said the dog did not belong to any of the victims. He said the investigation was underway.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page was established to help cover Quick’s funeral expenses.

“Robert Joseph Quick was attacked by a dog while protecting his little girl from the dog. He had a heart attack at the scene of the accident by the time the EMT’s got to him. They could not revive him. The family needs help with funeral expenses. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated,” the page read.

In a similar incident last week, police shot two dogs after the canines attacked a woman in Washington. Police said the unidentified woman was taking out the trash when the dogs attacked her and bit her in the face. The officers shot both the dogs. While one of them died on the spot, the other was wounded and had to be euthanized the following day. Meanwhile, the woman was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
