Prince Andrew’s honor from Queen Elizabeth II was a deliberate snub to Prince Charles.

In 2017, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Prince Andrew as the Colonel of the Regiment of the Grenadier Guards. The honorary appointment was bestowed to the Duke of York following the resignation of Prince Philip.

According to Express, Prince Andrew’s position at the center of the most important events in the royal calendar places him at the heart of the royal family and tradition which is a “deliberate snub” to Prince Charles who denied it to him in 2012.

For the Queen’s Jubilee year, the Prince of Wales excluded Prince Andrew and his family from the balcony appearance. The Queen appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony with Prince Charles, Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Harry.

Royal author Katie Nicholl wrote in her 2011 book, “Harry: Life, Loss and Love,” that Prince Charles wants a more streamlined royal family when he reigns, so he didn’t invite the Yorks. However, the author added that Prince Philip would have not allowed Prince Charles to do it if he were just well enough to attend the event. But the Duke of Edinburgh didn’t make it due to illness.

“One family member told me that such a thing would never have been allowed to happen had the Duke of Edinburgh been there,” Nicholl wrote.

“It did cause some ill-feeling among some members of the extended family, including Prince Andrew, who was particularly upset not to have been included,” Nicholl wrote.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip shared a more loving relationship to Prince Andrew compared to Prince Charles. The Queen and the duke welcomed their second son a decade after Princess Anne’s birth.

According to Andrew Morton in his book “Andrew: The Playboy Prince,” Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite child is the Duke of York. In fact, she was excited when Prince Andrew nanny’s is off from work because she wanted to look after her son.

“The Queen looked forward to Mabel’s night off with relish,” Morton wrote. “For then she could go to the nursery and bath and read stories to her favourite son.”

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip also decided to treat Prince Andrew differently from Prince Charles and Princess Anne by not exposing him to the public. They realized that too much publicity had bad effects on their children especially to the Prince of Wales who was naturally very shy.
