Prince Charles wasn't sure about Princess Diana at first, based on a letter he wrote to a friend.

In a letter unearthed on Netflix's "Royal House of Windsor" documentary, the Prince of Wales wrote a letter dated Jan. 28, 1981 addressing his proposal to Princess Diana. "I’m terrified sometimes of making a promise and then perhaps living to regret it," Prince Charles wrote (as quoted by Express).

Prince Charles' shocking admission came just a month before he and Princess Diana announced their engagement on Feb. 24, 1981. During their engagement interview, the future king said that he was "delighted and frankly amazed that Diana is prepared to take me on."

A body language expert previously revealed that based on Prince Charles' actions during their engagement announcement, something was already wrong. The future king also showed signs of distress and regret on their wedding day.

"When Prince Charles and Diana announced their engagement there were already signs that all was not well," Dr. Peter Collett said. "We can see that they together, but they are not in step and Charles is not adapting his behaviour to include Diana."

"In fact, if we apply the cut-out principle, and remove Diana from the scene, it does not look like anyone is missing," he added.

Prince Charles was in love with Camilla Parker Bowles. However, the royal family didn't approve of her for him because she's an "experienced woman." They also didn't find the Duchess of Cornwall to be "aristocratic" enough for the heir to the throne.

"It was absolutely vital to have on the throne somebody who was a virgin," Dr. Piers Brendan address what Camilla's experience that the royal family didn't approve. "A future Queen must have no past."

Camilla went on and married Andrew Parker Bowles. On the other hand, Prince Charles tried to look for a bride that suits his family requirements. So, he married Princess Diana. However, he never really got over Camilla.

"I think he had a closer relationship to Camilla than practically anybody. He really really loved her," royal author Penny Junor said. "They had so much in common their brains kind of worked in the same way. I guess he didn't meet anyone else who quite matched up to her."

Prince Charles and Camilla's first marriages didn't work. Princess Diana said in one interview that "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded," implying about Prince Charles and Camilla's affair. The Prince of Wales and Camilla eventually rekindled their romance and got married.
