Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have shown public displays of affection multiple times throughout the year. Some royal fans are convinced that they have broken royal protocol for being too touchy-feely, but a royal expert said that this may not necessarily be the case.

While speaking with People, royal etiquette expert Myka Meier said that senior members of the royal family would not normally be told how they should interact with their partners or when they can engage in PDA. What the royal family does is they adjust their level of PDA depending on the formality of the event they are attending.

“At a somber or more formal event, we are less likely to see PDA than at a casual event where it would be deemed more fitting,” she said.

This means that as long as the occasion is appropriate, Prince Harry and Markle can engage in PDA. Throughout the past couple of months, they have been photographed touching each other’s backs and laps and holding hands.

In August, Mike and Zara Tindall also made headlines after the former was photographed touching his wife’s backside. Even though the gesture seemed shocking to royal fans, the Tindalls did not necessarily break royal protocol.

Meanwhile, Markle and Prince Harry delighted fans during their trip to Sussex in October. At the time, Rebecca English, a royal correspondent for Daily Mail, uploaded a video of the Duchess of Sussex stroking the Duke of Sussex’s back.

“I love that they hold hands. Nice to see in this mad world,” one fan tweeted.

“I actually think it’s important to show affection by holding hands in front of school children. It would be good if children saw this example at home,” another fan tweeted.

Another fan said Prince Harry and Markle inspire her so much.

A month earlier, Prince Harry and Markle attended the WellChild Awards, and Prince Harry was seen caressing his wife’s back in public. And last summer, they kissed on the lips while at a polo match.
