Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles have very different memories about their respective dads.

In the book “Charles & Camilla: A Portrait of a Love Affair” by Gyles Brandreth, it was revealed that Prince Charles oftentimes saw himself as a victim of Prince Philip’s harsh and hectoring parenting methods. The Duke of Edinburgh also made his eldest son cry on multiple occasions.

At mealtimes, there have been instances wherein Prince Philip’s banter reportedly reduced the Duke of Cornwall to incipient tears. And on one occasion at the Braemar Highland Games, Prince Philip publicly rebuked Prince Charles for fidgeting.

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith said in “Prince Charles: The Passions and Paradoxes of an Improbable Life” that the heir to the throne was belittled by his father’s tough personality. The Duke of Edinburgh thought that Prince Charles was too soft.

During his interview with Brandreth, Prince Philip admitted having an entirely different personality compared to Prince Charles.

“He’s a romantic. I’m a pragmatist – that means we do see things differently and because I don’t see things as a romantic would, I’m unfeeling,” he said.

Meanwhile, Camilla has nothing but wonderful memories of her dad. During her interview with the author of “Charles & Camilla: A Portrait of a Love Affair,” the Duchess of Cornwall said that her dad was wonderful when she was still a child.

“He’s always fantastic – great support for everything,” she gushed.

But despite Camilla’s close bond with her dad, Major Bruce Shand didn’t want his daughter to wed Prince Charles. According to The Guardian, Shand held a private meeting with Prince Charles and he allegedly reproached him for ruining Camilla’s life. This confrontation reduced Prince Charles to tears.

Luckily for the couple, it was only a matter of time before they got Shand’s approval. Camilla’s dad, later on, described Prince Charles as someone who was very fair-minded and sincere. At one point, he also said that he has no doubt that Prince Charles would make a perfect King one day.

In 2006, Shand passed away at the age of 89.
