Prince William was not happy with the way Prince Harry and Meghan Markle refuted Queen Elizabeth II's statement after they were stripped of their royal patronages, a report says.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Friday that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will no longer be returning to royal duties, making their decision to step back as working royals a year ago final. In the statement, it was revealed that Prince Harry and Markle will be giving up all of their patronages, while the duke will relinquish his honorary military titles.

However, unnamed sources close to the royal family told U.K.'s The Times that the Sussexes' response to the Queen made his older brother Prince William "very upset."

The second in line to the throne was "really sad and genuinely shocked" by Prince Harry's decision to be "insulting and disrespectful" toward their grandmother, one source "close to Prince William" told The Times.

The statement Prince William reportedly took issue with was released by Prince Harry and Markle through their spokesperson shortly after Buckingham Palace's announcement and directly addressed the Queen's claim that they can no longer be of public service. Royal correspondent Omid Scobie shared the statement on Twitter.

"As evidenced by their work over the past year, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the U.K. and around the world, and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official role," the message read. "We can all live a life of service. Service is universal."

One source close to the royal family called Prince Harry and Markle's move "petulant and insulting to the Queen," adding, "Don't disrespect your granny, Harry."

"You don’t answer the Queen back — it’s just not done," another insider said.

Aside from the Duke of Cambridge, the other royal family members were reportedly "stunned" by the tone of the Sussexes' statement. Prince William also feels sad that he can no longer work alongside his brother while serving the monarchy, one aide said.

"Once he got over the anger of how things happened, he was left with the absence of his brother," the unnamed aide told the outlet of the brothers. "They had shared everything about their lives — an office, a foundation, meetings together most days — and there was a lot of fun along the way. He’ll miss it forever."

Read the statement from Buckingham Palace below.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed to Her Majesty The Queen that they will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family.

"Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service. The honorary military appointments and Royal patronages held by The Duke and Duchess will therefore be returned to Her Majesty, before being redistributed among working members of The Royal Family.

"While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family."
