Princess Diana knew her marriage with Prince Charles was over when a particular incident happened.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had a fairytale wedding. However, their marriage was very different because they had an “unhappy” union.

According to Andrew Morton in his book “Diana: Her True Story — In her Own Words,” the “beginning of the end of their marriage” happened after they welcomed their second son, Prince Harry. Prince Charles didn’t hide his disappointment after welcoming another boy and this deeply hurt Princess Diana.

“Diana knew that Charles was desperate for their second child to be a girl. A scan had already shown that her baby was a boy,” Morton wrote.

Princess Diana kept the gender of their baby a secret until he was born. When Prince Charles learned about it, he wasn’t happy at all.

“Charles’ reaction finally closed the door on any love Diana may have felt for him. ‘Oh it’s a boy,’ he said, ‘and he’s even got rusty hair’. With these dismissive remarks he left to play polo,” Morton wrote.

“From that moment, as Diana told friends: ‘Something inside me died.’ It was a reaction which marked the beginning of the end of their marriage.”

However, some believed that Princess Diana never stopped loving her husband. According to Petronella Wyatt, she spoke with Princess Diana along with other friends and they asked the Princess of Wales what she wanted to do if she could live her life again. The People’s Princess told them that she would “redo my marriage.”

“But I always thought, and so did friends of both her and Charles, that she remained a little in love with him. I never thought she was in love with Dodi Fayed,” Wyatt said.

Princess Diana’s friend and trainer Jenni Rivett also revealed that Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom didn’t want to divorce Prince Charles. She didn’t want to end their marriage because she wanted to be the Princess of Wales and the Queen of people’s hearts. Most of all, she wanted to be a good wife and a good mother.
