  • PS Plus June 2021 features "Star Wars Squadrons," "Virtua Fighter 5" and "Operation: Tango"
  • This confirms a previous leak regarding June 2021's free PS Plus games
  • This is the second consecutive month that a triple-A EA game has been featured

The latest lineup of free games for PlayStation Plus has officially been announced by Sony, and it confirmed one of the leaks from earlier this week. Spanish website Areajugones previously claimed to have an accurate list of next month’s PS Plus games, and as it turns out, it was right.

June 2021’s free PS Plus games are “Star Wars Squadrons,” “Virtua Fighter 5” and “Operation: Tango.” All PS Plus subscribers will be able to claim these games at any time next month, and they will be playable so long as they have an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

This will mark the sixth consecutive week this year where Sony has featured at least one triple-A title on PlayStation Plus. This is also the second month where a big Electronic Arts game has been included as a free option for PS Plus subscribers, with last month having “Battlefield V” sitting in the spotlight.

“Star Wars Squadrons” is one of EA’s more recent releases. It’s a dogfighting game set in the “Star Wars” universe, featuring some of the franchise’s most famous and iconic spacecraft. “Squadrons” lies in the same vein as the franchise’s older dogfighting games like the classic “Star Wars: TIE Fighter” and the space combat aspect of the “Battlefront” games.

June’s free PS Plus games are once again in stark contrast with what Xbox has been offering for its Games With Gold service for Xbox Live.

The games that PlayStation offers for its subscription service are almost always recent releases. In some cases, PS Plus has even introduced freshly-released games as part of its subscription offers; such was the case with “Oddworld Soulstorm” and now, “Operation: Tango.”

However, Xbox has been compensating for Games With Gold’s lackluster lineups with amazing deals for the Xbox Game Pass.

Game Pass has been offering high-value deals featuring newly-released games. Last month, “Outriders” was greeted by a huge wave of players, most of whom were able to access the game via Game Pass. Xbox is also constantly updating this service to provide its subscribers with even better deals as time goes on.

As far as the direct-to-console subscription services are considered, PS Plus still holds the upper hand in terms of games. Whether or not Microsoft decides to merge Game Pass with Live is something that fans are still hoping to see in the future.
