Queen Elizabeth II has suffered two major losses in February.

According to Express, February is heartbreaking to the monarch because in the same month, two people close to her heart passed away. Queen Elizabeth II descended to the throne on Feb. 6, 1952 following the death of her father King George VI.

Every December, the Queen visits Sandringham to spend her holidays there. However, she always makes it a point to return to London on the said date to mark her father’s death anniversary in private.

Aside from her father’s death, Queen Elizabeth II’s sister Princess Margaret also passed away in the same month. The Queen’s younger sister who was only four years her junior died on Feb. 9, 2002. The royal siblings were raised as princesses, but they didn’t expect to take over the throne because their father was only the spare. King George VI only became king when King Edward abdicated the throne to be with his love Wallis Simpson.

According to the Queen’s press secretary, Princess Margaret died in her sleep from cardiac complications related to stroke.

The Queen’s sibling suffered three strokes since 1998. British media outlets reported that she retreated from the royal lift due to health complications and depression, The Oprah Magazine reported.

Princess Margaret was reportedly a heavy drinker and smoker. She smoked up to 60 cigarettes a day at one point in her life. She later suffered from pneumonia, migraines and hepatitis. In 1985, she had her lung tissue removed because it was reportedly cancerous.

Princess Margaret was also plagued with various controversies from her alleged diva behavior, tumultuous love life and health scares. However, those people close to her found her fun-loving and a fan of the arts.

In related news, the Queen is planning to continue the 10-year $479 million renovation for Buckingham Palace following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s exit. Her Majesty is reportedly looking for a strategic planner who will also help them facilitate the communication between the in-house Programme Management Office, contractors and consultants.
