The royal family has been plagued with a slew of controversies, but there are some secrets that left more impact on the world than others.

Amani Hughes, a journalist for Express, compiled some of biggest royal family secrets that rocked the world, starting off with the fact that Queen Elizabeth I’s love life.

It has been revealed that Queen Elizabeth I was dubbed as the Virgin Queen because she died a virgin. She ascended to the throne in 1558, but she never got married. However, this didn’t mean that she never got into a relationship.

King George’s nine sons failed to wed respectable women so they struggled to produce a legitimate heir. King George IV was able to marry but the sole child of his loveless marriage passed away childless in 1817, and this started a succession crisis.

This prompted George’s sons to marry European princesses in order to conceive the next heir, which was eventually won by Edward, the Duke of Clarence, King George III’s third son. The latter became the father of the future Queen Victoria.

Many years ago, King George IV ascended the throne, but he didn’t get on well with his wife. He was determined to keep her off the throne so he took Caroline to court for adultery. King George IV was convinced that the public would side with him, but they didn’t.

Fast forward to the 20th century, Prince Charles and Princess Diana were also involved in a slew of controversies. Before their wedding, Princess Diana became aware that Prince Charles rekindled her romance with his ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles. However, they still decided to tie the knot.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage didn’t last very long. The couple announced their separation 11 years after their wedding. In 1996, they got divorced.

The year 1992 was referred to by Queen Elizabeth II as annus horribillis or horrible year. This is because three of Her Majesty’s four children made steps towards ending their respective marriages this year. The great fire also destroyed the Queen’s castle in Windsor.
