Queen Mother was furious with Princess Diana when she talked about her marriage with Prince Charles to Andrew Morton.

Queen Mother and the late Princess of Wales had a great relationship. However, things turned sour when Princess Diana opened up about her failed marriage with Morton in the book “Diana: Her True Story,” which was published in 1992.

In the biography “Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: The Official Biography,” Queen Elizabeth II’s mom opened up to Sir Eric Anderson, the former Provost of Eton College, that she was “deeply shocked” with Princess Diana’s confessions. She reportedly couldn’t believe that the People’s Princess would work with Morton. The said interview was later made available to biographer William Shawcross who wrote the book.

“It is always a mistake to talk about your marriage,” Queen Mother told Anderson in their 20-hour interview.

Shawcross noted that Queen Mother was sympathetic about Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson. She understood the pressure that the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of York faced when they joined the family after exchanging “I dos” with Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, respectively. However, she couldn’t grasp why they had to talk about their marriages to others outside their family.

Queen Mother hated Princess Diana’s move about disclosing her rocky marriage to a biographer because her life was based on obligation, discretion and restraint.

“The Princess’s public rejection of her husband and his life was contrary to everything that Queen Elizabeth believed and practised,” Shawcross added. “She also regretted it when Prince Charles discussed his private life in a wide-ranging series of interviews with Jonathan Dimbleby.”

Queen Mother gifted Princess Diana a sapphire and diamond brooch as an engagement present. The People’s Princess considered it a “staggering gift.” In return, the late Princess of Wales told Queen Mother that she would try her hardest to give her grandson, Prince Charles, the love and support he deserved.

Queen Mother and Prince Charles were very close. In fact, the Prince of Wales was closer to his grandmother than to his own mom, Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Mother even fought with Prince Philip for Prince Charles when the Duke of Edinburgh decided to send the heir to Gordonstoun in Scotland.
