The Queen Mother reportedly had the bad habit of arriving late to the royal family’s dinner. And her constant tardiness force Queen Elizabeth to make a white lie that the late royal never found out about.

While speaking with Marie Claire, former royal chef Darren McGrady said that it reached a point where the members of the royal family realized that they always had to wait very long for the Queen Mother. And to ensure that this will never happen again, Her Majesty gave her mom a different time.

“Dinner was at 8:30 pm in Balmoral when Her Majesty the Queen Mother was in attendance. They used to tell her that dinner was at 8:15 pm, and she'd be the last one down…They told everyone else at 8:30 because they knew she'd be late,” McGrady said.

But even though the Queen had to lie to her mom, this doesn’t mean that the latter took offense. In fact, the two female royals used to be close to each other. However, just like all mothers and daughters, they also got into a slew of arguments.

During an interview with Daily Mail, the Queen’s racing manager, Lord “Pochy” Carnarvon, said that the monarch wasn’t pleased with how the Queen Mother spent her money. The late royal used to buy clothes as though she was buying eggs.

And in an article by The Guardian in 2002, it was revealed that the Queen and the Queen Mother got into a massive argument on the phone at the opening of West End. Even though the details of the alleged argument have not been released, the publication claimed that the late royal asked her eldest daughter who she thinks she is. The 93-year-old monarch surprisingly told her mom that she’s the Queen.

But following the death of the Queen Mother in 2002, Her Majesty was spotted crying in public. Six weeks later, Princess Margaret also passed away.
