The Bethesda showcase at the recent Summer Games Fest previewed most of the company’s long-awaited games, including a first look at actual gameplay for “Redfall,” Arkane Austin’s upcoming co-op shooter.

“Redfall” was previously revealed during E3 2021, and many gamers shrugged it off as just another “Left 4 Dead” with cultists and vampires. However, the latest gameplay trailer showed that Arkane’s new shooter would follow a completely different track.

Based on the demo, it seems like “Redfall” is going to be more similar to “Borderlands” than Valve’s ubiquitous zombie apocalypse co-op game. Instead of going into linear missions as a team of four, players in “Redfall” can play either alone or with a group of friends.

The game does feature Arkane’s signature brand of supernatural action-stealth gameplay, and it seems like the town of Redfall itself will be fully explorable.

The demo showed off some basic combat against vampires. The enemies are fast and aggressive melee fighters who tend to get in the players’ faces. While it doesn’t look like normal gunfire is enough to kill them outright, a well-placed flare or metal stake to the heart while they’re weak can turn them into dust.

Apart from normal guns, players get access to a variety of specialized vampire-killing tools like the aforementioned flare guns and stake launchers. Later in the demo, one character deployed an electric device to stun enemies in the vicinity, opening them up for killing blows.

Throughout the game, players will fight across the streets of the town proper, including inside homes and other establishments. The playable game space also appears to extend to Redfall’s rural areas and some secret government facility.

There are also more supernatural areas, like a mysterious door leading to a twisted version of reality, which was formed by “some sort of collective consciousness,” according to one character.

“Redfall” is set to release sometime in the first half of 2023. The game was previously delayed with “Starfield” back in May to give the developers more time to realize their ambitions. It will be available on the Xbox Game Pass.
