“Roswell, New Mexico” is all about romance, but it looks like some shippers will have to wait for their favorite couple to get together. Michael and Alex (AKA Malex) are not starting off the season together, and actors Michael Vlamis and Tyler Blackburn told International Business Times that they’re exploring other romantic options on Season 2 of The CW drama.

“He’s just a sexy guy so there's a lot of sexual tension,” Vlamis, who plays Michael, told IBT and a small group of reporters at New York Comic Con. “But no, we spend a lot of time together in a different context this year, which has been really cool and it's been fun seeing him in a different light.”

Blackburn, who plays Alex, echoed the sentiment in a separate interview. “Sure, there is some sexual tension, but they're not pursuing a relationship. Alex actually decides to try a different relationship,” Blackburn dished. “So, there's a new love interest for Alex this season. The same for Guerin, actually.”

Vlamis confirmed that Michael and Maria (Heather Hemmens) will be getting closer: “I spend a lot of time with Maria too, which is really nice. And I like it. It's very fresh and working with Heather is so fun. There might be some other love interests in there too, but that might just be me being ornery.”

However, Blackburn didn’t reveal the identity of Alex’s new love interest in “Roswell, New Mexico” Season 2. He teased that the character is new to town and has blue hair.

“His whole vibe shakes up the norm of Roswell. He's just edgier than most people in Roswell,” the actor teased. “I think for Alex, it just reminds him of who he was in high school. He's kind of like, ‘Oh, maybe this guy can help me come out of my shell a little bit more.’ Even just for Alex's costume choices this season, there's a slow progression of him trying to pull in a little bit more leather jackets, trying to get back to who he was before his life was ruined and he went into the Air Force and all of that.”

Despite both halves of Malex trying to move on, they aren’t cutting each other out completely. They’re working on their friendship.

“I feel like this season their main focus is let's get back to basics. … They have such a passionate connection, but it's like, what's at the bottom of it?” Blackburn shared. “They're trying to support each other through that and still be friends. It's a little bit heartbreaking, but I think it's actually pretty realistic. I've had situations like this, where it's like, let's take some space and let each other breathe. Then if we come back together, we come back together.”

Malex has a passionate fanbase. They’re anxiously waiting for Michael and Alex get back together, and Blackburn says a prior job prepared him for such enthusiastic shippers.

“I feel like maybe being on ‘Pretty Little Liars’ and understanding what it takes for a relationship to mean something to the public, I feel like I kind of knew that it had potential to become something really special,” Blackburn said. “I was very pleasantly surprised that the public has embraced that weird relationship that they have. Yeah, I feel like it's a good one.”

Fans can watch Alex and Michael’s friendship (for now) on “Roswell, New Mexico” Season 2, airing Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
