KEY POINTS

  • "Parasite" became the first-ever foreign-language film to win best cast at the SAG Awards
  • The movie has also been nominated for 3 Oscars, including Best Picture
  • Song Kang-ho felt honored to receive the award

Bong Joon-Ho’s South Koren blockbuster hit “Parasite” is creating all the right buzz before the Academy Awards, which will take place next month in Los Angeles. The movie created history by winning the prestigious Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award for the Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture recently and has made the race for best picture at the Oscars even more interesting.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Parasite” became the first-ever foreign-language film to win the prestigious trophy in the history of SAG awards. All the film’s main cast members were present to receive the award. Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-gyun, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam got to the stage and thanked everyone for such an amazing honor.

Kang-ho commented on the win with the help of a translator and candidly said that this win means that they did not create a “bad film.” He further stated that he is pleased to receive this honor in front of such esteemed people and he will never forget this “beautiful” night.

"Although the name of the movie is ‘Parasite,’ I think the story is about co-existence and how we can all live together. I am so honored to receive this award in front of such amazing actors that I admire. I will remember and never forget this beautiful night. Thank you so much," Kang-ho said.

The movie had to face some stiff competition from movies like “Bombshell” (Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie), “Jojo Rabbit” (Taika Waititi and Scarlett Johansson), and “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” (Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie).

With over 100 international awards in its briefcase, the movie created history by becoming the only sixth movie to be nominated for Best Picture and Best Foreign-Language Film on the same night.

The previous movies to achieve this massive feat are “Roma” (2018) “Z” (1969), “Life Is Beautiful” (1998), “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000), and “Amour” (2012).

Interestingly, all of the movies mentioned above went on to win the award for Best Foreign-Language Film but failed to bag the Oscar for Best Picture.

It is also South Korea’s first movie to be nominated at the Academy Awards.

Apart from “Parasite,” other notable winners of the night were Joaquin Phoenix (Best Actor), Renee Zellweger (Best Actress), Brad Pitt (Best Supporting Actor), and Laura Dern (Best Supporting Actress).

On the Television side, Phoebe Waller-Bridge won the Best Actress in a Comedy Series while Peter Dinklage took home the Best Actor in a Drama Series trophy.
