Samsung has announced a true 8K resolution TV at IFA 2018 in Berlin. The new TV is called the Q900R QLED 8K and it will be available in stores by the end of September.

The Samsung Q900R QLED 8K TV will be available in 65”, 75”, 82” and 85” screen sizes. The new TV is also notable for being the very first commercially available 8K QLED TV. Samsung says that its 8K QLED TV features a peak brightness of 4,000 nits and comes with HDR10+, which is a high dynamic range standard that’s directly competing with Dolby Vision.

Samsung says the Q900R QLED 8K TV is also capable of 8K upscaling. The TV is able to do this through 8K AI Upscaling, a proprietary technology that uses artificial intelligence to upscale any content of any format or source and deliver a picture quality “to a level compatible with 8K.” This just means that anything the user watches on the Q900R will be automatically upscaled to 8K resolution. This includes content being watched from streaming services, a USB drive or from set-top boxes. This 8K AI Upscaling is essential to how the TV works since there aren’t a lot of native 8K content available today.

“At Samsung, we’ve worked tirelessly over the years to move the industry forward when it comes to premium picture quality, and the introduction of our QLED 8K with 8K AI Upscaling is an integral component as we look to the future of displays,” Samsung visual display business senior vice president Jongsuk Chu said. “We’re thrilled to introduce the Q900R to consumers and are confident that they will experience nothing short of brilliance in color, clarity and sound on our new 8K-capable models.”

The Samsung Q900R QLED 8K TV also comes with a Quantum Processor 8K, which is responsible for recognizing and upscaling content on the TV. The Q900R features Direct Full Array Elite dimming, which should help in further enhancing contrast and deliver precise backlighting control.

As for other features, the Samsung Q900R comes with the ability to recognize connected devices, a single optical cable connection for power and video and an ambient mode, according to Engadget. The Samsung 8K TV is also a SmartThings device, which means that it’s able to provide users with quick access to news and weather information.

The Samsung Q900R 8K TV is currently being showcased at IFA 2018 in Samsung’s booth. Unfortunately, exact pricing and availability details have not been revealed, but it’s very likely for the device to cost a lot given its specs and features.
