  • Early foldable smartphones have a plastic display cover
  • Leaks reveal Samsung will use a foldable glass cover for its upcoming Galaxy Fold 2
  • The Galaxy Fold 2, however, will still have a crease like the first Galaxy Fold

Leaks reveal that Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone might be the first of its kind to feature a glass display, unlike other earlier foldables that use plastic for the screen.

Samsung is expected to release its second entry to the foldable smartphone category next year. This model is believed to have a clamshell design which indicates that it will compete with the slightly delayed Motorola Razr foldable. If new reports are to be believed, however, it appears that it will be the first of it kind to have a key feature that will make it even more attractive than the Razr.

According to a noted Twitter leaker who goes by the name Ice Universe, Samsung's upcoming but still unofficially named Galaxy Fold 2 might use glass for its display.

“ It can be confirmed that the Galaxy Fold2 leaked not long ago will use an ultra-thin glass cover for the first time in the world, replacing plastic materials,” the leaker tweeted.

Ice Universe added that the Galaxy Fold 2's display looks flatter and has less wrinkles compared to plastic display covers used on other devices such as Samsung's own Galaxy Fold. “In fact, this is the correct cover material for foldable phones,” the leaker added.

If Ice Universe's words are true, then indeed the upcoming Galaxy Fold clamshell will be a very interesting and appealing buy. Previous reports said the Korean tech giant plans to sell the upcoming device at around $850 so that it can sell more foldables next year. The affordable selling price, form factor and first-of-its-kind foldable glass display are sure to attract more consumers.

It's worth noting, though, that Ice Universe never mentioned that the display on the upcoming device won't have wrinkles or creases. The first Galaxy Fold, which went thorough an extended revamping period, features the now infamous crease which, of course, can be expected to appear since it uses a foldable plastic display cover.

Does this mean the upcoming foldable won't have a crease? XDA Developer's Max Weinbach, via a tweet, said the Galaxy Fold 2 will still have a crease. In fact, Weinbach said that according to a few people who used the upcoming device, the Galaxy Fold 2 will have a crease that's “about as noticeable as it is on the current Galaxy Fold.”

Weinbach's announcement might sound like a turn-off for some, but considering how much Samsung plans to sell the device for, it won't be as bad as paying nearly $2,000 for a first-gen foldable with a plastic screen with a notorious crease.
