The Samsung Galaxy Note 8’s stylus — the new S-Pen leaked online in two images Wednesday. The leaked photographs indicate Samsung has not made any radical design changes to the stylus, although the new S-Pen seems a little longer than the previous one.

According to a report, the stylus will feature a new functionality including currency conversion, translation support, always-on display compatibility mode and support for digital sticky notes. Users will essentially be able to use the S-Pen by just taking it out of its slot and writing on the display without unlocking the device. They will also be able to enable and disable this functionality.

A Samsung patent that surfaced in September indicated the new S-Pen might be Bixby-compatible and have an onboard speaker to communicate with the user. The leaked images do not vitiate the earlier rumor, since going by the patent the speaker would be placed at the top of the stylus on its handle, while the Samsung button on the stylus might act as a Bixby button. The functionality might be useful for creating voice notes on the device or letting the device read notes already stored on it.

The mechanism might work better than the Bixby button on the Samsung Galaxy S8. According to BGR, it might also ease up the hardware space on the handset, which could be used to boost battery capacity and include additional components on the device.

The length of the stylus might be an indication of the presence of either an S8-like edge-to-edge display or an LG G6-like 18:9 display, both of which will be wider than one on the Note 7 and provide the user with more surface area. It might provide better dimensions at making it easier for the user to interact with the enlarged display.

The new S-Pen might also be differently located on the Note 8 than the earlier versions of the device — instead of the top of the handset, it would be located at the bottom according to leaked photos, which surfaced on June 27.

It is also expected to have an inbuilt motor which will work with the FindMyMobile app to find your Note 8.

The new S-Pen could also have the GIF maker support which would convert up to 15 seconds of video into GIFs. Samsung is also expected to improve the S-Pen nib for more precise handwriting and drawing capabilities.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is an important flagship device for the company, especially since it is expected to revive the Note series post the Note 7 scandal last year. If the rumors are to be believed, it should be capable of supporting a feature-rich S-Pen, since it is expected to come with 6GB RAM and 64GB onboard memory.
