  • Williams said she had two to three stylists braiding her hair all night as she slept ahead of the wedding

Serena Williams recalled how she prepared to look her best when she attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding.

The tennis superstar graced the cover of Vogue's September issue. In her interview, she shared that her look at the royal wedding took "all night" to prepare.

"I love this image," she said when she saw a photo of her and her husband Alexis Ohanian at Windsor Castle. "This is at the royal wedding when my friend Meghan married Harry."

She recounted wearing a Versace dress with "stunning" Bulgari jewels for her accessories. She also shared the "iconic" story behind her style that day.

"But what so iconic about this, is I was like 'Royal wedding? I'm definitely wearing braids,'" Williams shared.

She had two or three stylists braiding her hair "all night." She couldn't keep up with them since it took a long time, so she fell asleep while they were still braiding her hair.

"I was so tired. I was like, 'I'm going to sleep,'" she continued. "So I lie down, and then they just kept braiding until the morning, and they finally finished."

She added, "It was a very long process, but it was so worth it."

While looking at the photo, the tennis champ complimented her husband, saying she loved his look at the event. According to the athlete, Ohanian looked younger. He wore a black tailcoat to the wedding.

Williams said the event reminded her a little bit of "Downton Abbey" before commenting on the English fashion.

"British style's definitely different. Women have to wear fascinators which are hats" while men, including her husband, wear tails.

Williams and Markle have been close friends for years. Their friendship started in February 2014 when both played a game of flag football on Direct TV's Celebrity Beach Bowl. They immediately hit it off with the former "Suits" star calling Williams her "confidante."

The professional tennis player also praised the Duchess of Sussex for maintaining her pose during her and Prince Harry's tell-all with Oprah Winfrey last year. She praised Markle for her strength and confidence.

"Meghan is a great person, and I think the epitome of strength, the epitome of confidence, the epitome of just selflessness, and the epitome of everything is just her and everything that she's gone through," Williams said as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "And I know it's not easy, and you can see from the interview that it wasn't easy. But she had so much poise, and she still had so much class."
