  • Sony uses a lottery system in Japan to cater to customers
  • The company also said it does not have any plans to hold events or sell the PS5 at stores on launch day
  • Sony is set to release the PS5 on Nov. 12 and Nov. 19

The PS5 release date is just a few days away, but Sony has confirmed Japanese gamers who have not already secured a PS5 would not get one on launch day.

Sony announced Thursday on the PlayStation Blog the PS5 has completely sold out in Japan. The gaming giant mentioned the console was sold out by the reserved amount because of "high interest" and number of customers’ orders. Unlike in other regions where pre-orders are on a "first come, first serve" basis, Japan uses a lottery system to cater to customers.

The system allows those lucky enough to get a winning ticket to place a PS5 pre-order. The company also said it does not have any plans to hold events or sell the PS5 at stores on launch day, which falls Nov. 12 in Japan. This is the company’s measure to safeguard the interests of customers, retailers and staff since there are still concerns about the spread of the coronavirus.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan apologized to fans for the inconvenience. However, it encouraged potential PS5 buyers to check with retailers on how they could collect or receive their pre-ordered consoles. The gaming console maker anticipates massive sales numbers from the PS5 in the first few months it's available.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said earlier he expects the PS5 to outsell the PlayStation 4 in just four months after its release. The PS4 sold 7 million units within four months, which means Sony has to ship a lot of PS5 units this year and until the first quarter of 2021.

Sony also aims to sell more than 100 million PS5 units in the next-generation gaming console’s lifetime. While it may sound like an impossible feat, it's worth mentioning that the company did achieve this figure with its previous-generation consolese, except the PS3.

The PS5 is set to arrive on different dates depending on the region. For the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Singapore and Japan, the PS5 is set to arrive Nov. 12. The rest of the world is scheduled to receive Sony’s gaming console a week after.
