What should have been a seamless event on Wednesday to drum up hype for Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 5 has instead had more than its fair share of preorder chaos and muddled messaging.

During the event, the gameplay trailer for the remake of “Demon’s Souls” and the surprise reveal of “Final Fantasy XVI” came with hints that the games would also be available on PC, despite many expecting them to be exclusive.

After the event, Sony also clarified that lower-end PS4 versions of highly-anticipated PS5 games “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” and “Horizon: Forbidden West” will be available, calling into question how advanced the PS5 versions will actually be.

Sony was quick to tell Kotaku that the “Demon’s Souls” PC mention was a flub and that the game was definitely an exclusive PS5 launch title. Talking to the Verge, Square Enix also emphasized that it only announced a PS5 version of “Final Fantasy XVI,” without outright stating that it would be an exclusive title. The trailer specified that its footage was running on a PC emulating the “PlayStation 5 experience.”

The whole messaging kerfuffle adds up to doubt for many players that the PS5 will be a worthwhile investment in the short term. Why put down $499 now when the hottest games are also coming to a system you already own?
