Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm has decided to pull out of a New Year's Eve show in Poland, earning praise from LGBTQ supporters.

Also known as "Sporty Spice," 48-year-old Chisholm tweeted about her change of plans Monday without specifying the reason for dropping out of the show, which was scheduled to be held in the predominantly Catholic nation known for its strict "LGBT-free zones."

"In light of some issues that have been brought to my attention, that do not align with the communities I support, I'm afraid I will no longer be able to perform in Poland as planned on New Year's Eve," she wrote. "I hope to be back there very soon. Hope you're all having a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for 2023."

Chisholm's decision received praise from Twitter users.

"I'm super proud of you, my dear. This small things change the world. Thanx," one user said, while another praised her by calling her "The best ally."

However, some were not happy with the announcement. One user lambasted the singer and said, "Your loss not ours. Do some research and don't believe everything you've been told."

"Actually Mel, you could have accepted the offer and vigorously express your opinion on homophobia, transphobia and violating women's rights in the eye of the tornado. And still earn the money," another person tweeted.

Around 100 towns and regions across Poland are considered "LGBT-free zones" after they passed resolutions declaring themselves free of "LGBT ideology."

These zones prohibit the promotion of homosexuality and even ban teaching about the issues in schools. But in June, a Polish appeals court ruled the "LGBT-free zones" must be abolished in four municipalities. This move was seen by activists as a victory for human rights and democracy.

The New Year's Eve show was organized by Polish state broadcaster TVP. It will go on as planned even though Chisholm has pulled out of it, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The "Wannabe" singer has been known for supporting various charities throughout her career. In August last year, Chisholm was awarded the Celebrity Ally prize at the British LGBT Awards for her support of the community.

She released her solo album, "Melanie C," in 2020. She also published a memoir, "The Sporty One: My Life as a Spice Girl," in September.
