“Star Wars: Episode 9” has a new droid to adore. BB-8 is reportedly getting a companion this time around, and the new droid considers him to be his daddy. The name of the new addition and other details have surfaced online.

Warning! The following article contains “Star Wars: Episode 9” spoilers.

BB-8 has won over the fans since his introduction in “The Force Awakens,” and it has played an important part in the “Star Wars” canon since then. Now, Making Star Wars, a trusted source for leaks from the franchise, has reported that a new droid named D.O or Dio is being introduced in the upcoming film.

What’s special about this new “Star Wars: Episode 9” droid is that it considers BB-8 to be its parent and is very attached to the soccer droid. It remains to be seen how this will be introduced in the film.

The Dio droid is being called an ugly duckling idea. The shape and design of the droid were compared to that of a megaphone. Readers should, however, note that characters tend to evolve over time, and the final product seen on screen may turn out to be quite different from the initial design.

When the creators first designed BB-8, they thought of it as female, Entertainment Weekly reportedly. Neal Scanlan, the head of the creature shop, explained how they debated about the gender of the droid right from the very beginning.

BB-8 was initially a female, but they changed it to male later. This, Scanlan explained, was a part of the evolution of the character. The change in the gender impacted the way the droid looked and moved.

The lenses of the droid that form a big part of the “face” were used extensively to showcase different emotions in the films. From the large puppy dog eyes to a “slightly aggressive posture,” the lenses helped in showing the right look.

As far as BB-8’s personality is concerned, Scanlan said that he imagined the droid to be “quite manipulative.” He said the droid knows he is cute and uses that to his advantage, the way children sometimes do. Now that BB-8 may be a father in the next film, it remains to be seen how he will handle a cute droid that may use the same tricks.

Droids have been an important part of the “Star Wars” franchise, and they have even managed to appear in TV shows and comics. According to a report by Screen Rant, the comic book “Poe Dameron #28” shows the interaction between BB-8 and R2-D2. Instead of the general beeping sounds that the droids make, with others translating what those sounds mean, the comics show the actual words of the two droids in a conversation.
