Subaru has issued a recall for nearly 200,000 vehicles that may result in the transmission having to be replaced.

The recall affects certain 2019 to 2020 Ascent, 2020 Legacy and 2020 Outback models.

The issue stems from an improperly secured drive chain, which could slip and break caused by a programming error in the transmission control unit that could allow the clutch to engage before the drive chain is completely clamped. This could cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash when driving.

To repair the drivetrain problem, Subaru dealers will reprogram the transmission control unit as well as inspect it for chain slip and visually inspect the chain guide. If they find evidence of chain slippage or any damage, the transmission on the vehicle will be replaced at no charge to the vehicle owner.

Recall notices are expected to be mailed to vehicle owners on Feb. 7, 2022, with projected repairs slated to be available in April.

Questions about the recall can be directed to Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614.

Subaru said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the transmission issue, but issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

The recall does include Ascents that were covered in a 2019 recall for hydraulic sensors in the transmission.
