KEY POINTS

  • The community of players of "Super Mario Bros. 35" has discovered how to unlock Luigi as a playable character
  • It requires completing every stage in the game at least once
  • Luigi was also a playable character in the original "Super Mario Bros." in 1985

Platform battle royale title “Super Mario Bros. 35” apparently kept Mario’s brother, Luigi, from everyone.

Although Nintendo has never mentioned Luigi as a playable character in the game, “Super Mario Bros. 35” players have figured out just how to unlock the green-and-white-clad plumber. Luigi, after all, was present in the original “Super Mario Bros.” from 1985, so fans of that title thought it would make sense for him to join his brother in “Super Mario Bros. 35” as well.

According to Eurogamer, players found that every stage of “Super Mario Bros. 35” must be completed at least once and that a Star Rank level is not required for Luigi to be unlocked like previously believed.

Upon completion of every stage in the game, players just need to hold the L button (for Luigi, perhaps) when loading a match to play as Luigi rather than Mario.

In “Super Mario Bros. 35,” up to 35 people can simultaneously play through separate platforming levels from the original NES title, and defeated players are transported to other players’ courses.

Also created by “Super Mario Bros.’” Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario’s younger brother, Luigi, first appeared as the character controlled by the second player in the 1983 Game & Watch handheld title “Mario Bros.” He retained the role in the arcade game of the same name.

From a mere palette swap of Mario’s red to green, Luigi has since developed his own characteristics and is depicted as taller and thinner than his older brother.

While Luigi appeared in most “Mario” games as his brother’s sidekick, he has also starred in his own titles, particularly from March 2013 to March 2014 for the celebration of the character’s 30th anniversary.

The “Year of Luigi” saw Luigi-themed games such as “Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon,” “Dr. Luigi,” “Mario & Luigi: Dream Team” and “New Super Luigi U.”

Luigi has also starred in games for the GameCube, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U and arcades. The most recent Luigi-centered game was “Luigi’s Mansion 3” on the Nintendo Switch.
