“Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed that General Zod’s (Mark Gibbon) arrival in National City is more like a cameo than a full-fledged guest-starring appearance.

“It’s a bit of a fun surprise,” Kreisberg told TVLine of Zod’s debut appearance in Season 2 of the CW series. “He doesn’t have a lot of screen time, so I can’t say our interpretation is as nuanced as either [‘Superman II’s’] Terence Stamp or [‘Man of Steel’s’] Michael Shannon, but we did one thing to put our own stamp on it — at least visually.”

The exec producer said that Gibbon’s version of the character will have “a little bit of that Nazi uniform look you’d see in the comics in the ‘60s.” So “Supergirl’s” Zod is visually different from Stamp’s Zod who wears what looks like a martial arts kimono, and from Shannon’s version who sports a mechanical armor.

“It’s definitely fun for us,” Kreisberg said of bringing Zod into “Supergirl.” “And when you see the context in which he appears, it could only be Zod in that episode. ”

Late last month, Gibbon was spotted at Vancouver’s Robson Square filming his part on “Supergirl.” According to YVRShoots, Gibbon filmed a scene in which his character faces off against Kara (Melissa Benoist) and her cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin). In the comics, Zod is a former Kryptonian military general who was exiled to the Phantom Zone for treason due to Jor-El’s efforts. When Zod survived the destruction of Krypton, he swore revenge against Jor-El’s son, Superman. Zod is a member of the Kryptonian Military Guild and the Phantom Zoners. The character, which is considered as one of the greatest villains of the Man of Steel in the comics, was created by Robert Bernstein and George Papp. He first appeared in “Adventure Comics” #283 in 1961.

It’s unclear when Gibbon is exactly making his debut appearance, but based on the set photos that surfaced online, the Canadian actor will be in Season 2 finale, titled “Nevertheless, She Persisted.”

Plot details about the season finale are being kept under wraps, but Kreisberg teased to E! News that Kara is going to need advice, mentorship, support and love from all the important people in her life in the finale “where she’s forced to make several very difficult decisions.”

Kreisberg also revealed to Entertainment Weekly last February that the content of the box — which Lillian Luthor (Brenda Strong) found among Lex Luthor’s weapons in Season 2, episode 12 — will play a key role in the finale.

With huge guest stars, stunts and visual effects in the finale, Kreisberg told Comic Book Resources that the season ender has a “feature film quality” to it. He also revealed that viewers will get a glimpse of the Season 3 villain in the episode.

“Supergirl” Season 2 finale is slated to air on Monday, May 22 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
