  • Microsoft to fix Surface Laptop 3 cracked displays for free
  • Cracking displays caused by foreign particle
  • Issue likely rampant among devices with aluminum shell

Microsoft created quite a whir recently when they came out with their latest Surface Pro offerings. And while the new devices are something to look forward to, it remains that previous models still have some problems that need addressing.

Most may have heard of the mysterious shutdown plaguing the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 mentioned in a previous post. The occurrence has yet to be explained and a solution for the mystery shutdowns remains unclear. Now, it appears a new problem has cropped up and it involves screens cracking for no immediate reason on Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 machines. The physical issue is something that cannot be addressed by a patch since it is a physical-related problem.

Each time an external part of a device is damaged, such would translate into cost. Considering most are cash-strapped right now, it is an expense that most will not welcome. Thankfully, Microsoft is offering a free fix to the cracked displays at no additional cost. Microsoft is asking people who own Surface Laptop 3s to immediately contact their support team.

Before doing so, there are several things to be reminded of. One is that the free fix is only applicable to Surface Laptop 3 devices that are still in the warranty period of the device. Folks who may have paid to repair their Surface Laptops can also inquire how they can reimburse their payments. Lastly, the free repair or reimbursement does not cover devices with cracked screens if they were dropped or by other means, ZDNet reported.

According to Microsoft, the cracks may have been due to a foreign particle which can cause a hairline fracture on the screen of the Surface Laptop 3. As of this writing, only a small number of cases have been reported. The Redmond company adds that this issue may be prevalent to Surface Laptop 3s shelled in aluminum cases over the Alcantara-covered ones. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 is one of the more expensive laptops in the market to date, something that can be easily upgraded but hard to repair. Thankfully, the said issue will be covered by Microsoft provided it meets the criteria mentioned above.
