Jennifer Kaytin Robinson revealed the things that inspired her to create MTV’s “Sweet/Vicious.” MTV

“Sweet/Vicious” is one of the most progressive shows on television today, boldly tackling different current social issues like sexual assault and racial discrimination, among many others. In a couple of recent interviews, series creator Jennifer Kaytin Robinson talked about her inspiration behind the very timely MTV series.

During a brief chat with Marie Claire, Robinson revealed that she has always wanted to write something for the millennials that would match their level of intelligence. “I wanted to write something that could be for this generation, and could be more than pretty faces and surface-level problems,” Robinson said. “Millennials are a lot smarter than entertainment gives them credit for. There’s no reason these subjects [sexual assault and racial discrimination] should be taboo and go un-tackled. It’s a no-brainer.”

While “Sweet/Vicious” usually centers on different forms of sexual assault, Robinson told Collider earlier this month that this aspect of the show wasn’t the main inspiration for the series. “It was more writing a show for and about empowered women,” she said. “I never really saw myself on TV, especially as a young woman. I never really watched something and was like, ‘Oh, wow, it’s okay to be weird and broken, but also very strong, and all of these things at once.’ That was the inspiration for me.”

“And then, it was about telling these stories that are important to women … and shedding light on issues that I think need to be in the mainstream, but maybe otherwise are looked at as taboo or too controversial to tackle,” she added. “I just don’t agree with that. I think there need to be more stories out there that are able to shed light on and bring awareness to these causes, especially causes for women, for minorities, for people of color. I think those are the most important stories that should be told today.”
