Take Two, publisher of the Grand Theft Auto and 2K Sports games, has been voted the best major publisher of 2010 by the review site Metacritic.

Buoyed by the multi-platform western Red Dead Redemption and the latest entry in the Civilization series, Take Two received an average metascore of 77.1, slightly besting runner-up Nintendo by one point. Two in three of Take Two's releases received positive reviews.

The publisher did not release a Grand Theft Auto title in 2010.

By contrast, over half of Nintendo's releases received positive ratings last year. This includes Super Mario Galaxy 2, which received the highest overall score in 2010.

Rounding out the rankings of major publishers was Konami, which received an average Metascore of 62.2 on titles like Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

This is the first time Metacritic has ranked game publishers.
