Fans were psyched to learn that Sharkboy and Lavagirl would be making an appearance in the upcoming Netflix movie, “We Can Be Heroes.” However, their spirits were quickly crushed when they learned actor Taylor Lautner wouldn’t appear in the film.

The Robert Rodriguez-directed flick takes place in the same cinematic universe as the 2005 film, “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.”

Although it is not a sequel, it will reunite fans with the two characters who are now adults. In the original film, Taylor Lautner played Sharkboy, and Taylor Dooley took on the role of Lavagirl.

While Dooley is set to reprise her role, Lautner will not appear in the film, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Instead, JJ Dashnaw will be taking on the role of Sharkboy. This has upset the folks on Twitter, who want to know why the 28-year-old didn’t reprise his role for the Netflix film.

“I’m sorry, but Taylor Lautner will always be THE Sharkboy, and Netflix should’ve done everything possible to get him out of the cave where he’s hiding. I want my full 2005 nostalgia experience!” one fan tweeted after learning about Lautner’s absence from the film.

Another person added, “You can’t have the OG Lavagirl without the OG Sharkboy. Someone get Taylor Lautner on the phone and ask him why he didn’t come back.”

Meanwhile, one fan admitted they were surprised by how affected they were over Lautner’s absence from the film.

“I did not expect to be this disappointed that Taylor Lautner wasn’t returning for the Sharkboy and Lavagirl sequel YET HERE WE ARE,” the individual tweeted.

Netflix is expected to release “We Can Be Heroes” on “New Year’s Day.
