A woman was accidentally shot dead by a friend while filming a fake kidnapping video for TikTok. The incident took place in the Chihuahua neighborhood of Rigoberto Quiroz, Mexico, last week.

The woman, identified as 20-year-old Areline Martínez, was filming the video with 10 friends when one of them accidentally shot her with a 45-caliber gun. While most of the friends fled the scene after the shooting, one of them contacted the police to report the incident, Yahoo Australia reported.

In the video, the woman appeared to be blindfolded with her legs and hands tied up. She is made to sit beside another "hostage" and the two are playfully threatened by the other men. Suddenly, one of the men points the gun at them and a short while later, Martínez is shot.

"One of the hypotheses is that they were tampering with a firearm thinking that it was not loaded [and] they shot the woman," César Augusto Peniche, the Chihuahua state attorney general, told local news outlet Proceso.

An investigation was ongoing and it was not known if anyone was arrested in connection with the incident. It was also unclear if the handgun was licensed.

"If someone has a criminal responsibility, they will have to answer. There are several facts to investigate: the unfortunate death of the young woman and the origin of that weapon and how it came to their hands," Peniche told the outlet.

The incident comes months after a teen accidentally shot himself while filming a TikTok video in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The boy, identified as 18-year-old Keshav Kumar, returned home from college and asked his mother to give her a licensed pistol. The boy then went to his room and minutes later, his mother heard a gunshot. The woman rushed the boy to the hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
