  • After going through six directors and several stops and starts, Tom Holland says the "Uncharted" feature film is going very well
  • Based on the "Uncharted" series of video games from Naughty Dog, Holland stars as a young Nathan Drake in a prequel to the first game released in 2007
  • The film is on its seventh director, Ruben Fleischer, the director behind "Zombieland" and "Venom"

Fans of the “Uncharted” video game series can calm down. If actor Tom Holland is to be believed, filming for the long-beleaguered motion picture has been “going so well.”

Eurogamer reports that Holland shared this via an Instagram Live broadcast yesterday even as he discussed various upcoming projects. He also revealed suffering a big bruise in a revealing area as a result of filming the live-action adaptation of the hit game from Naughty Dog.

"Filming is going so well," Holland said. "The film is like, everything I dreamed it would be. I mean, I don't know if you guys played the games, but I was such a huge fan of the game, and it's been going so well."

The video game series began in 2007 with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” for the PlayStation 3 and chronicled the adventures of professional treasure hunter Nathan Drake. In the same vein as action-adventure icons like Indiana Jones and Lara Croft, Drake came in with his own combination of swagger and self-deprecating humor to separate him from everyone else.

With a third-person perspective and exploring locales like the Amazon rainforest, snowcapped mountains of Tibet, and even uncharted islands near Africa, the series has been a massive hit for developers Naughty Dog.

Rumors of a film adaptation began as early as 2009 but six directors came and went even though Sony targeted a release date of December 2020 for the film. However, in March, a seventh director in the form of “Zombieland” and “Venom” director Ruben Fleischer emerged to take the challenge.

In February, Holland said the film told the origin story of the games, and the script was "one of the best [he's] ever read". Perhaps there's hope yet for this cursed production. What won’t, though is that December 2020 release due to the pandemic. Instead, if all goes according to plan, we may finally see it released in July 2021.

"I think what ‘Uncharted’ offers that most video games films don't is that it's an origin story to the games," Holland said at the time.

"So if you played the games, you haven't seen what's going to happen in the film," he said. "And if you haven't played the games, you're going to enjoy the film because it's information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I'm super excited to make that movie and it's been a long time coming."

The current plan is for this first “Uncharted” film to serve as an origin story for Nathan Drake and lay the groundwork for what the filmmakers hope will be a series of films.

Gaining global fame for his portrayal of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland is set to star in the upcoming film “Cherry” directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, his directors in the "Avengers" films.
