The 2022 World Cup was witness to just how beloved the sport of soccer is around the world and for many players, they took it as an opportunity to showcase their wares to clubs interested in their services.

Dutch superstar Cody Gakpo is the first domino to fall in the transfer market.

PSV Eindhoven of the Eredivisie, the Netherlands' highest level of club soccer, announced a few hours ago that the star winger is going to the English Premier League after agreeing to terms with Liverpool and will be traveling to England to complete the deal.

Both sides are not going to reveal the transfer fee for Gakpo, but PSV Eindhoven general manager Marcel Brands noted that it was a "record transfer for PSV."

According to prominent soccer journalist and transfer market king Fabrizio Romano, the belief is that Liverpool will be paying £37 million ($44.7 million) as a guaranteed transfer fee with £13 million ($15.7 million) in add-ons to the deal.

Gakpo, 23, became an international sensation after scoring three goals in the Netherlands' outing in the World Cup, scoring a total of three all-important goals in the group stages that saw the Oranje reach the quarterfinals.

The Netherlands eventually fell to eventual World Cup winners Argentina after the game went to a penalty shootout that went in the favor of the latter, with a score of four to three.

On the club side of things, Gakpo has been in stellar form this season as he scored nine goals and added 12 assists in 14 league games for PSV Eindhoven who are currently at third place in the Eredivisie.

Gakpo was also a solid contributor in five Europa League outings with three goals and two assists to his name.

Prior to the global soccer tournament, Dutch captain and soon-to-be Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk had glowing praise for his younger counterpart.

"Hopefully Cody (Gakpo) can go to the moon and back. He is a very good player and a good boy too. What we see in training is what you see on the pitch. There is still so much potential and I hope he can carry on showing it for us. We are very happy with him," Van Dijk said as quoted by the BBC.

The hype surrounding the 6-foot-4 left-winger is very much deserved and Liverpool being the ones to take him away from eternal rival Manchester United has to be a great feeling for manager Jurgen Klopp.
