Alfred Molina is set to reprise his role as Doctor Octopus in the third “Spider-Man” movie starring Tom Holland. Molina played the villain in 2004's “Spider-Man 2,” where Tobey Maguire played the web-slinging superhero, and garnered a lot of praise.

The 2004 superhero film is still considered one of the best “Spider-Man” movies ever to be made and Molina’s portrayal of Doctor Octopus was one of the major reasons for its success, Variety reported. As soon as the news of his casting surfaced online, Twitter went berserk and celebrated the development.

“This is one of those rare superhero movie casting choices that’s met with excitement,” one fan tweeted.

Some said they are beyond excited to see Molina revive the character because Doctor Octopus is the best “Spider-Man” villain when it comes to big-screen adaptations.

“Oh my god. Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock is still the best Spider-Man villain put to film so far. If this really happens, oh my god,” another fan wrote.

“Alfred Molina coming back would be great. Probably the best villain in all the movies,” a third Twitter user wrote.

Meanwhile, others believe Molina’s appearance in “Spider-Man 3” should have been revealed at movie theaters.

“They should have kept it a secret. Would have been a big surprise watching the movie and then seeing Alfred Molina on-screen unexpectedly,” @clutchkeeve wrote on Twitter.

“Wow, this is crazy! He’s my favorite Spider-Man villain. Live-action Spider-verse is actually happening,” @bashful_michael said.

Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will also be returning for the third movie, reports said. Garfield and Dunst seem to have accepted the offer to feature in the film, while Maguire and Stone are still in negotiations to be part of the project.

The reports come almost two months after it was confirmed that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his role as Electro in “Spider-Man 3.” The Academy Award-winning actor played the character in the 2014 movie “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which featured Garfield as the wall-crawler.

Holland's “Spider-Man 3” is set to be released on Dec. 17, 2021.
