KEY POINTS

  • King Charles expressed his "love" for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as they "continue to build their lives overseas"
  • Some royal fans believe the new monarch extended an olive branch to the Sussexes
  • Other social media users suggested that King Charles "technically ousted Harry and Meghan overseas"

King Charles III mentioned Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in his first speech after Queen Elizabeth II's death.

On Friday, the new monarch broke the years of tension between him and the Sussexes during his first public address to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth as King Charles III. In his speech, the 73-year-old sent his "love" to his younger son, 37, and daughter-in-law, 40, who stepped down from their royal duties and moved to California in 2020.

"I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas," King Charles was quoted by People as saying in a pre-recorded video message that aired on TV Friday.

Prince Harry opened up about the tensions between him and his father during his and Markle's March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. The Duke of Sussex claimed that Charles cut him off financially and stopped taking his calls following the couple's decision to step back from their roles as working royals.

Markle also spoke about the father and son's strained relationship during a recent interview with The Cut.

"Harry said to me, 'I lost my dad in this process,'" Markle said of the couple's decision to give up royal duties.

King Charles' comment about the Sussexes received mixed responses from royal fans and social media users, with some suggesting he extended an olive branch to the couple and others claiming he "ousted" them overseas.

"I am glad he expressed his love for Harry and Meghan," one Twitter user wrote.

"I think King Charles III's public expression of love for Harry and Meghan, AND royal titles for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet send a single unmistakable message to the haters, British media and so-called royal experts: 'KISS MY ROYAL CHUDDY,'" Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu tweeted.

However, another person commented, "It's not what King Charles III says in public about Prince Harry and Meghan that stands, but what he says and does when no one is around that's concerning! I will never forget him not taking Prince Harry's call when he needed him!"

"His message read: 'As a father, I love you, [but] as a monarch, I have nothing for you,'" another suggested of King Charles' shoutout to the couple.

A fifth user claimed that Prince Charles "technically ousted Harry and Meghan overseas."

"[King Charles'] speech was touching, warm, sincere, heartfelt and masterful. His pledges earnest. The messages were clear. And to Harry and Meghan, an earnest, exceedingly polite, 'Bugger off back to America,'" another claimed.

Prince Harry and Markle are currently in the U.K. for a series of charitable engagements.

Prince Harry rushed to Balmoral in Scotland sans Markle Thursday to say a final goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II but did not make it in time, Page Six reported. His grandmother died at age 96 Thursday afternoon.

The duchess reportedly didn't travel to the Scottish estate with her husband due to "tensions" between her and the royal family following her bombshell interview with The Cut.

Prince Harry is now fifth in line to the throne following his grandmother's death. His children with Markle, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, 3, and Lilibet Mountbatten Windsor, 1, are now sixth and seventh in line, respectively.

After the accession of their grandfather to the throne, Harry and Meghan's children are now technically His Royal Highness Prince Archie of Sussex and Her Royal Highness Princess Lilibet of Sussex as a result of conventions created over a century ago, CNN reported.

Under protocols established by King George V in 1917, the children and grandchildren of a sovereign have the automatic right to the title HRH and prince or princess.
