Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission
The upcoming free virtual reality expansion to "Star Wars: Battlefront" is expected to be released during the holiday season. EA

Electronic Arts (EA) and developer Criterion Games announced during Gamescom 2016 that the upcoming X-Wing VR expansion for “Star Wars: Battlefront” will tie-in to the upcoming film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

EA originally announced back in June during E3 that the X-Wing VR expansion was simply an added virtual reality mission for “Battlefront.” Now, Criterion has decided to simply tie-in the upcoming virtual reality expansion to “Rogue One” to complement the current state of the “Star Wars” universe.

“‘Rogue One’ is in the same time period the base game covers, so to be relevant in the ever-evolving 'Star Wars' universe we’ve since been able to work with Lucasfilm to make the connection here,” Criterion Games producer James Svensson said.

In order to make the connection between the game and the movie a lot clearer, the new expansion has been renamed to “Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission.” The tie-in is also timely considering that “Rogue One” will be released this coming December, around the same time when the expansion will be available.

As for the expansion’s actual plot, players will be placed in the cockpit of an X-Wing through the PlayStation VR. Svensson teased that players may have to battle Star Destroyers along with TIE fighters during the VR Mission.

As of this writing, EA has not revealed an exact release date for the “Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission” but the publisher has promised to make it available during the holiday season. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16, so it’s possible that the “Battlefront” expansion will arrive before then.

“Rogue One: X-Wing VR Mission” will be available for free for those who have “Star Wars: Battlefront” for the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation VR, accoridng to GameSpot. The PlayStation VR is scheduled to be released on October 13 and will sell for $399.

For those who don’t have any plans on buying the PlayStation VR, EA will also be releasing a “Battlefront” expansion called “Rogue One: Scarif” during the holiday season. The expansion will feature a map of Scarif, a new planet that’s also of vital importance in the upcoming film.
