KEY POINTS

  • Bonemass is difficult to take down because of its poisonous attacks and the many monsters around the Swamps
  • Frost Arrows can make short work of the "Valheim" boss thanks to their high elemental damage
  • Using buildings can make this boss fight trivial

The bosses in “Valheim” can take a bit of effort to take down. They all require a degree of preparation before players can even consider fighting them. This is especially true for Bonemass, the game’s third boss, considering the terrain that it spawns on.

The Swamp biomes are more difficult to traverse than the peaceful Meadows, and they are home to enemies that are much deadlier than the ones in the Dark Forest. “Valheim” players will have to deal with poisonous Blobs and Leeches, swarms of Skeletons and Draugr and the occasional Fire Geyser that spawns flame-throwing Surtlings.

While players can do things the old-fashioned way and simply hit Bonemass with a mace to the face, there are other much safer options to consider that are especially useful for solo players.

Frost Arrows

Bonemass has a strong resistance to Pierce damage. This means Spears, Atgeirs and Arrows will do minimal damage to it. Among all of the arrow types in the game so far, Frost Arrows are the only ones that can do meaningful damage to the boss.

This is because the majority of the damage dealt by these arrows is Frost, and Bonemass is surprisingly weak against it. Frost Arrows are also relatively easy to farm in the Mountains.

Killing Bonemass solo will require at least two full stacks of Frost Arrows and about two Finewood Bows depending on a player’s Bow skills. Simply kite the boss and avoid the rest of the smaller monsters until Bonemass is no more.

Bringing Poison Resistance Potions is still advised.

Cheesing with buildings

Creative players can opt to use the “Valheim’s” building mechanic to cheese the boss. Platforms can be constructed around the boss area to wall mobs away or give players a more leveled fighting area.

Players can use Hoes to raise small stone pillars around the boss area, creating extra points of cover against Bonemass’ ranged attacks while creating extra obstacles for the boss to navigate through. Hoes can also be used to raise dirt around the boss area to make a larger walking surface and prevent Leeches from spawning.

YouTuber FireSpark81 was able to beat Bonemass solo by creating a treehouse with a small firing window, letting him rain Frost Arrows on the boss from a safe distance.
